Yoga and Mindfulness Day Retreat

Date: Saturday May 5th

Venue: Sharrow School Performing Arts Space, Sheffield

On this day retreat you will experience both mindful movement and meditation interspersed with teaching and reflection.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a physical form of yoga. The word ‘hatha’ is made up of two Sanskrit words; ‘ha’ which means sun and ‘tha’ which means moon. The objective therefore will be to bring balance and harmony to the body and mind. Postures will be adapted around the needs of your individual body and is suitable for people with or without prior experience.

The yoga practices included in the day retreat will range from energetic standing sequences to gentle restorative postures.

She holds a British Wheel of Yoga Diploma and has taught at various venues in Manchester and Sheffield from Sheffield University to Virgin Active, and recently the Department of Education. She also holds a level three Pilates qualification and her sessions bring awareness to postural alignment.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about bringing awareness to our present experience without judgment. It includes paying attention to our mind, emotions and body sensations with gentleness and kindness. Meditation helps to rewire our brains to be less reactive and busy. This enables us to have more choice in how we relate to life.

In this day we will explore more of what mindfulness is and experience a range of practices which will leave with a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Jane is an accredited Mindfulness teacher with Breathworks and is listed on the UK Network of Mindfulness teachers. She also has many years of experience as a nurse working in both London and Sheffield. Jane currently delivers a number of eight-week Mindfulness programmes for stress, health and parenting. In addition, she has facilitated workshops and workplace sessions for organisations such as John Lewis and Hallam University.

Stretching your Imagination: Yoga and Creative Writing workshops

Saturday 18th November
At One Space, Union St, Sheffield S1 2JR

10.30-15.30 £46

Whether you’re a creative writer whose work might benefit from a mindful focus, or an experienced yogi who has always been curious about their creative potential (or, of course, someone somewhere in between) these workshops are ideal for exploring new ideas and techniques.

Workshop One: The Senses

In this workshop we’ll be focusing on the senses. As writers we will be exploring how the use of our senses can deepen our experience of reading and how we can use this to create atmosphere in our own writing.

The yoga will help to free up the body and mind in order to write. We will use different ways to physically explore the senses during our yoga practice, giving us plenty of creative inspiration to draw upon and at the end of the workshop we will finish with a lovely relaxation. Tea and biscuits will be provided.

Suzannah Evans is a poet based in Sheffield. She has published a chapbook of poems, Confusion Species, which was a winner in the Poetry Business Competition in 2012, judged by Carol Ann Duffy. She has had poems published in many places including Poetry Review and the Guardian’s Poem of the Week. She has been doing yoga with Leonie for three years and can vouch for its strengthening, relaxing effects!

Leonie Luxon undertook a three year diploma in Hatha Yoga through The British Wheel in 2006. She is also a level 3 qualified Pilates instructor and has many years’ experience helping to improve people’s wellbeing. She holds an MA in ‘Creative Writing: Innovate and Experiment’ from Salford University and has a previous work background in advertising industry as a Creative Copywriter as well as over 10 years experience as a lecturer in Advertising Design and Graphics at Salford and Sheffield Hallam Universities.

This workshop will examine the importance of engaging and using the core muscles in yoga postures. The core muscles are essential for maintaining a healthy spine and posture. They give us inner strength, allowing us to hold arm balances and strength poses for longer, giving us a renewed sense of confidence and control. We will be using some pilates exercises to strengthen the deep abdominals (mula bandha and uddiyana bandha) and using some balancing yoga postures to help us improve our inner steadiness. The small pilates ball will also come into play! Mindfulness of breath will bring about an inner stillness, allowing this focus on our centre to reconnect body, mind and spirit. There will be a tea break mid way through this workshop and time to chat and relax in friendly surroundings. We will round off the workshop with some lovely restorative stretches.

Saturday 18th June – Yoga for the Spine – Me-time for Mums

Picking up toddlers, not having time to exercise as much as you want to, fatigue and changes in the body after pregnancy can all take their toll on your back. Learn how to gently release tension and reduce aches and pains in the spine. This workshop will focus on both upper back and lower back releases, exploring healthy movement for the spine. The asana workshop will be split into two parts, with a tea break inbetween, and rounded off with time to still the mind, focus on breath awareness and enjoy a wonderful relaxation.

Saturday 2nd July – Gratitude Workshop

10-1pm
Instinctive Health,
Unit 13 Yoga Studio
Neepsend Triangle Business Centre,
1 Burton Road, S3 8BW
£30 pre-book or £32.50 drop in
To reserve your space, visit instinctivehealth.co.uk/workshops/

This yoga workshop puts the emphasis on gratitude being another way for expressing our intrinsic interconnectedness with the rest of the universe. The first part of the workshop will be a physical asana session with poses that can unleash feelings of joyfulness, creativity, love and compassion. As we move, we will contemplate the chakras, the energy points that according to yogic philosophy run along the spine. Mindfulness and meditation will pave the way for us to a creative exercise – filling and decorating our own Gratitude Jar. Tea, biscuits and smiles will fuel our inspiration. We will finish the workshop with a relaxation including time for a sankalpa, or personal affirmation to leave us feeling great.

This three hour workshop includes your own take home Gratitude Jar!

Pilates & Yoga Workshop for upper back, shoulders & neck 23rd August 2014

By | Events | No Comments

10-12.30pm at Fallowfield Union Chapel, M14 6EQ

Join me for a morning of pilates and yoga focusing on the upper back, shoulders and neck. This is an area of the body that can easily get very tight and creaky due to prolonged sitting, driving and stress.

We will work on both strength and flexibility using both exercises from Joseph Pilates and yoga asanas and we’ll even fit in a short herbal tea break halfway through (biscuits too!). Your whole body will get a workout but with this special emphasis on the upper body you should hopefully leave the room walking taller and feeling a new sense of space between shoulders and ears!

For this workshop it is helpful if you have some experience either of pilates or yoga.

£15 per person, £14 for concessions – pay on the day but please reserve your place first with me as spaces are limited.

[email protected] or find me on facebook or twitter (leoniesyoga), or talk to me after class!
